Joiner Image by Jill Furmanovsky – Johnny and Oasis in the studio during the recording of Heathen Chemistry

But I love the carefully (make that, symmetrically) cut-up collage that Furmanovsky assembled from various pictures she took at a London studio in December 2001, a few days after George Harrison died. The members of Oasis, joined by Johnny Marr, are sitting down, listening to Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass.” They’re surrounded by several more images of themselves, recording in the studio that same day. The panoramic image has the classic feel of time-delay, but it also says something about the music-making process, that of inspiration and continuity – the notion that “All Things Must Pass” and yet, and this seems a fitting conclusion, that “The Show Must Go On.”

OasisRiverside – Newcastle Upon Thyne – 9 August 1994
There is the story of a notorious gig riot, supposedly sparked by a punter who threw a punch at Noel Gallagher, where a loaned 1960s Gibson Les Paul Custom was damaged.

Noel was using a 1960s Gibson Les Paul Custom which was damaged during the incident at Riverside. It’s the same guitar that he uses in the ‘Live Forever’ video. In the mid-90s it was worth a five-figure sum even without its music history. And it wasn’t his, it was Johnny Marr’s! And Johnny bought it from Pete Townshend! These days you could sell it and buy a couple of houses. Johnny had become friendly with Noel after attending a couple of gigs, at his brother Ian’s recommendation, and this had led to Oasis being represented by Marcus Russell, who was also Johnny’s manager. Johnny was subsequently surprised when Noel made a big deal in the press about this ‘gift’ as if it was some torch-passing moment, when it was really supposed to be just borrowed until he could afford a replacement second guitar to take on tour, to avoid tuning delays. Noel freaked out so much when it was damaged that the show was over within moments.
