‘Plastic Key To Living’. It’s a lot of fun. I’ve been aching to record that co I don’t even have a demo of it. I wrote it, then just gigged it but I’ve never recorded it. There’s another track that’s gonna be on the EP that’s pretty new. I wrote that the day before I went on tour, when I was supposed to be rehearsing. That’s from late January.Exposed, 2012

Niles Marr, who performs under the moniker Man Made, is one of the foreign acts appearing at this year’s Reykjavík Music Mess. Born into a heady rock pedigree (his father is guitarist Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Modest Mouse), he’s performed with the likes of Broken Social Scene and Bright Eyes. With one EP under his belt, he’s looking to see if 2012 will be his year.

Clixie Live Review: Howler (The Lexington, 06/06/12) by Katy Hoey – 13 February 2012
Performing tracks from his self titled EP (Man Made), he looked both comfortable and confident as a musician whilst also showing a loveable sense of vulnerability through his heartfelt lyrics. As the venue began to reach capacity it was unsurprisingly the teenage girls dominating the front of the venue as they looked on lovingly at the man himself as he sang of both love and heartache.

These strong-yet-gentle vocals compliment a spooky and surrounding guitar sound that is as melodic as it is captivating, with the tones resonating in your brain long after you’ve stopped listening, drawing on influences such as Jeff Buckley and Damien Rice – you can’t help but wonder what it would be like with a full-on band belting out more beefed-up version of this dude’s songs, and then just as quickly realise that maybe they weren’t meant to be interfered with in such an elaborate way.

It was an early start for some, as Nile Marr, otherwise known as Man Made performed his ambient folk tunes to a modest but keen crowd at 11am. Marr is from Manchester and offered a beautiful collection of super listenable love songs that sounded fit to soundtrack an indie TV show. His lingering guitar melodies were as impressive as his gold sequinned jacket which Marr joked had ‘risen earlier than me this morning’. The easygoing tone of this performance was perfect to lift and soothe the dampened spirits due to the torrential rain that was already hammering down. Man Made has played with Broken Social Scene and is set to release debut material this summer.

What was the first song you wrote as a solo artist / band? How is the debut album coming together?
All of my songs were written as a solo artist and then just taken to a band, but I think the first proper song that I wrote was Bethany Joy. And in so a way that’s always going to be one of my favourites. I am currently recording my debut album. I am recording it using my laptop in my bedroom and I’m loving every minute of it. Its just a chance to be creative and express myself. I’m recording every minute I get but school does have a nasty habit of getting in the way. But it’s getting done one way or the other. And right now I’m still exploring what I want to do. And so once its done I don’t know what I’ll do with it, but I do know that I’ll just keep recording my stuff as I write it and see what happens.
