The interesting thing about that record, is that, we were talking about nods and things being lifted and inspired and all of that, but Joy Division’s, I might be wrong about this but I think it’s ‘Interzone’, was originally built on that same riff. What’s interesting about it to me, is like, when Bernard Sumner and myself got together to form Electronic, there was bit of scratching of heads going on around the music press particularly and some fans, like what’s a guy from The Smiths doing with a guy from New Order, but this is the sort of thing that we had in common, you know. Bernard was actually, he’s the only guy I knew who would ever play, tried to play the riff from ‘Keep On Keeping On’, and we had those thing in common, you know.”

The truth of the matter is, people might be interested in that ten minute version, but there’s a reason why we cut it down to a mere eight minutes or whatever it is. The finished article is probably the best out there.

THE SMITHS – ‘Sweet And Tender Hooligan’ 1986
written by Morrissey and Johnny Marr
I’ve always like that song. I really like the singing on it, particularly. And I love the band’s performance. And people who really like the band, who kinda like roll their eyes on my behalf when they hear jingle jangle miserabilism, you know fey, whatever it is that, you know, whatever box the band were often put in, ‘Sweet and Tender Hooligan’, amongst other songs come to mind, but this is just one of the songs that we used to do, and it shows that we were a pretty storming rock ‘n’ roll band really, if I can use that term.
