Johnny Marr and The Healers’s first show last night at Night & Day Cafe was an all around success judging the posts on Twitter. The band didn’t play any Healers songs from their first album Boomslang, instead Johnny offered up a slew of new ones – ‘Psychic Beginner’, ‘European Me’, ‘Sun and Moon (Reason)’, ‘Upstairs’, ‘Heartbeat’, ‘Say Demesne’, ‘My Delta’ and ‘Word Starts Attack’.
The night reaches a crescendo as fans hear the first chords of ‘How soon Is Now’, all eyes riveted to the stage. This is man is passionate about his music, he has a tremendous stage presence (with or without Morrissey) and a talent indescribable in words. He thrashes away at a collection of guitars, strings plucked in flawless fashion, he’s in a league of his own. Fans squeal with approval – they’re totally overwhelmed, we’re in the presence of a god.
The encore is short and sweet. Marr appears back on stage in a red checked shirt and explains he only brought one spare. The finale brings on a rapturous applause and cheers from every corner of the room. Before Marr and The Healers descend the stage he tells the fans about Manchester’s Deaf Institute performances next week before they head off to the other side of the pond.
