25th Anniversary celebration of The Queen Is Dead continues…

On Sunday, 26 June 2011, XFM’s Ian Camfield looked back at one of the most influential record of the 1980′s, The Queen Is Dead, and explored the making of the album and the legacy it has left behind. Contributors included Johnny Marr, Stephen Street, Brett Anderson, Billy Bragg, Mani, Guy Garvey and Clint Boon.

When we went into The Queen Is Dead – the making of it, the writing of it – I think we all felt that we needed to kinda do something pretty special, I think. Because Meat Is Murder, the record before it before it, got in at number 1, and we were starting to be recognized and given a lot of accolades. So, I remember just from my own part, thinking that right, ok, we’ve got to be better than The Who, or as good as the greatest really, not just like the greats. And it was quite a sorta daunting prospect.
