‘Go Johnny Go’ by Sandie Shaw – 1986

19 May 2011

Sandie Shaw sang ‘Go Johnny Go’, which was written for Johnny Marr, at the Town and Country Club (now the London Forum) on 30 June 1986.

I felt a bit bad about writing about Morrissey, and not about Johnny Marr, cause he is just as much a friend to me. So, for my next B-side, here’s a song about Johnny Marr.

Released in July 1986, ‘Go Johnny Go’ was the B-side to ‘Frederick’, Sandie’s cover of Patti Smith’s 1979 song dedicated to her future husband Fred “Sonic” Smith, guitarist with the Detroit band MC5. The Town and Country Club show was filmed and released on VHS in 1988. ‘Go Johnny Go’, written by Chris Bostock, Rob Marche, Mark I. Nevin and Sandie Shaw, was also included on Sandie’s 2004 4-CD box set Nothing Comes Easy, along with ‘Steven (You Don’t Eat Meat)’.

If I was a Stratocaster, shiny and new
You’d pick me up, you’d put the call through
You’d talk to me madly, like a man obsessed
—-carpet, where—-

You’re full of excuses, I’m choking with anguish
I’m—- , just returning your last wish
You’re always engaged, or you’re not taking calls
Or you’re stuck in the bathtub,——-

Ring, ring, ring, ring, pick up the phone
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know you’re at home
Ring, ring, ring ring, I know where you are, so
Go Johnny, Go Go Johnny, Johnny Guitar

——–, you don’t seem to care
I know you don’t answer, I just know that you’re there
They say you’re washing your hair, or you’re taking a shower
You’ve gone down to Woodies, be back in an hour
You’re working with Barry, you’re taking some aspirin
You’re top of the pops, that’s okay but Johnny I need

Ring, ring, ring ring, pick up the phone
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know you’re at home
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know where you are, so
Go Johnny, Go Go Johnny, Johnny Guitar

If I was a Stratocaster, shiny and new
You’d pick me up, you’d put the call through
You’d talk to me madly, like a man obsessed
—-carpet where—–

Ring, ring, ring, ring, pick up the phone
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know you’re at home
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know where you are, so
Go Johnny, Go Go Johnny, Johnny Guitar

Ring, ring, ring, ring, pick up the phone
Ring, ring, ring, ring, I know you’re at home
Ring, ring, ring, ring, you’re still in bed
